Classification: Antipsychotic, dimethylaminopropyl-type phenothiazine

Action/Kinetics: Significant anticholinergic, sedative, and hypotensive effects; moderate antiemetic effect; and weak extrapyramidal effects. Ineffective in reducing destructive behavior in acutely agitated psychotic clients.

Uses: Psychotic disorders.

Special Concerns: Safe use during pregnancy has not been established. Dosage has not been established in children less than 12 years of age. Geriatric, emaciated, and debilitated clients may require a lower initial dosage.

How Supplied: Injection: 25 mg/mL, 50 mg/mL; Tablet: 50 mg

Dosage
•Tablets Psychotic disorders.
Adults: 10-200 mg q 4-6 hr; adjust dose as needed and tolerated. Total daily dose should not exceed 1,000 mg. Pediatric, 12 years and older: 10-25 mg q 4-6 hr; adjust dose as needed and tolerated.
•IM Psychotic disorders, severe and moderate agitation.
Adults, initial: 50-150 mg; if desired calming effect is not seen after 30 min, give additional doses up to a total of 300 mg. Maintenance: 10-200 mg q 4-6 hr as needed and tolerated. Switch to PO therapy as soon as possible. Pediatric over 12 years: 10-25 mg q 4-6 hr for chronic psychotic disorders (maximum dose: 1 g/day).
