]Action/Kinetics:
On a weight basis, is 2-10 times more potent as an analgesic than morphine, although potency depends on the route of administration. Produces mild depression of the cough reflex and significant respiratory depression and emesis. Onset: 5-10 min. Peak effect: 30-60 min. Duration: 3-6 hr.
Uses:
Moderate to severe pain. Parenteral: Preoperative analgesia, to support anesthesia, obstetrics, relief of anxiety in clients with dyspnea associated with acute LV failure and pulmonary edema.
Additional Contraindications:
Use in paralytic ileus or for treatment of pulmonary edema secondary to a chemical respiratory irritant
Special Concerns:
Safety has not been determined for use in children less than 18 years of age.
How Supplied:
Injection: 1 mg/mL, 1.5 mg/mL; Suppository: 5 mg
Dosage
•SC, IM
Analgesia.
Adults, initial: 1-1.5 mg q 4-6 hr; dose can be increased carefully until analgesic response obtained.
Analgesia during labor.
Adults: 0.5-1.0 mg IM.

Analgesia.
Adults, initial: 0.5 mg. Increase dose cautiously in nondebilitated clients until analgesia is obtained.
•Suppositories
Analgesia.
Adults: 5 mg q 4-6 hr.
Note: For all routes of administration, use lower doses for debilitated and elderly clients and for liver disease.
