Classification: Corticosteroid, nasal

Action/Kinetics: Anti-inflammatory corticosteroid. Undetected in plasma although some may be swallowed after use. No effect on adrenal function.

Uses: Prophylaxis and treatment of the nasal symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and perennial allergic rhinitis.

Contraindications: Use in those with recent nasal septum ulcers, nasal surgery, or nasal trauma until healing has occurred.

Special Concerns: Use with caution, if at all, in those with active or quiescent tuberculosis infection of the respiratory tract, or in untreated fungal, bacterial, systemic viral infections, or ocular herpes simplex. Use with caution during lactation. Safety and efficacy have not been determined in children less than 12 years of age.

Side Effects: Respiratory: Pharyngitis, epistaxis, blood-tinged mucus, coughing, URI, sinusitis, rhinitis, asthma, bronchitis. Rarely, nasal ulcers and nasal and oral candidiasis. GI: Diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea. Miscellaneous: Headache, viral infection, dysmenorrhea, musculoskeletal pain, arthralgia, chest pain, conjunctivitis, earache, flu-like symptoms, myalgia, increased IOP.

How Supplied: Nasal spray: 50 mcg/actuation

Dosage
•Nasal Spray Seasonal/perennial allergic rhinitis.
Adults and children over 12 years: 2 sprays (50 mcg in each spray) in each nostril once daily (i.e., total daily dose: 200 mcg). In those with a known seasonal allergen that precipitates seasonal allergic rhinitis, give prophylactically, 200 mcg/day, 2 to 4 weeks prior to the anticipated start of the pollen season. Children over 3 years of age: 50 mcg.
