]Action/Kinetics:
Blocks both beta-1- and beta-2-adrenergic receptors. Reduction in intraocular pressure may be related to a decrease in production of aqueous humor and a slight increase in the outflow of aqueous humor. A decrease from 20% to 26% in intraocular pressure may be seen if the intraocular pressure is greater than 24 mm Hg at baseline. May be absorbed and exert systemic effects. When used topically, has no local anesthetic effect and exerts no action on pupil size or accommodation. Onset: 30 min. Maximum effect: 1-2 hr. Duration: 12-24 hr.
Uses:
Reduce IOP in ocular hypertension or chronic open-angle glaucoma.
Special Concerns:
Use with caution during lactation. Safety and effectiveness have not been determined in children.
Side Effects:
Ophthalmologic: Local discomfort, dermatitis of the eyelid, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, browache, tearing, blurred vision, abnormal vision, photophobia, edema. Due to absorption, the following systemic side effects have been reported. CV: Hypertension, MI, atrial fibrillation, angina, bradycardia, palpitation. CNS: Headache, dizziness, anxiety, depression, somnolence, nervousness. Respiratory: Dyspnea, rhinitis, bronchitis, coughing. Miscellaneous: Allergic reaction, asthenia, nausea, epistaxis, arthritis, myalgia, rash.

Dosage
•Ophthalmic Solution (0.3%)
Adults: 1 gtt in the affected eye(s) b.i.d. Increasing the dose or more frequent administration does not increase the beneficial effect. |
