]Action/Kinetics:
Peak plasma levels: 1-2 hr. t1/2: 30-100 hr. Hydrolyzed in the stomach to desmethyldiazepam, the active metabolite. Oxazepam is also an active metabolite. t1/2, desmethyldiazepam: 30-100 hr; t1/2, oxazepam: 5-15 hr. Time to peak plasma levels: 0.5-2 hr. Significantly bound to plasma protein and slowly excreted by the kidneys.
Uses:
Anxiety, tension. Acute alcohol withdrawal, as adjunct in treatment of seizures. Adjunct for treating partial seizures.
Additional Contraindications:
Depressed clients, nursing mothers.
Special Concerns:
Use with caution with impaired renal or hepatic function.
How Supplied:
Tablet: 3.75 mg, 7.5 mg, 15 mg; Tablet, Extended Release: 11.25 mg, 22.5 mg
Dosage
•Extended-Release Tablets, Tablets
Anxiety.
Initial: 7.5-15 mg b.i.d.-q.i.d.; maintenance: 15-60 mg/day in divided doses. Elderly or debilitated clients, initial: 7.5-15 mg/day. Alternative. Single daily dosage: Adult, initial, 15 mg; then, 11.25-22.5 mg once daily.
Acute alcohol withdrawal.
Day 1, initial: 30 mg; then, 15 mg b.i.d.-q.i.d. the first day; day 2: 45-90 mg in divided doses; day 3: 22.5-45 mg in divided doses; day 4: 15-30 mg in divided doses. Thereafter, reduce to 7.5/day and discontinue as soon as possible. Maximum daily dose: 90 mg.
Partial seizures.
Adults and children over 12 years, initial: 7.5 mg t.i.d.; increase no more than 7.5 mg/week to maximum of 90 mg/day. Children (9-12 years), initial: 7.5 mg b.i.d.; increase by no more than 7.5 mg/week to maximum of 60 mg/day. Not recommended for children under 9 years of age. |
