]Action/Kinetics:
Peak serum levels after 1 g IV: 73 mcg/mL. t1/2, IM, IV: 21-47 min. 70% excreted unchanged in the urine.
Uses:
(1) Respiratory tract infections due to Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus (penicillinase/nonpenicillinase producing), Klebsiella species, Haemophilus influenzae, and group A ß-hemolytic streptococci. (2) Skin and skin structure infections due to S. aureus, S. epidermidis (methicillin-susceptible strains), Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella species, and group A ß-hemolytic streptococci. (3) UTIs due to S. aureus, E. coli, P. mirabilis, and Klebsiella species. (4) Septicemia due to S. aureus, S. viridans, E. coli, Klebsiella species, and group A ß-hemolytic streptococci. (4) Endocarditis due to S. aureus and S. viridans. (5) Osteomyelitis due to S. aureus, Klebsiella species, P. mirabilis, and group A ß-hemolytic streptococci. (6) Preoperatively and postoperatively to reduce chance of infection during vaginal hysterectomy, open heart surgery, and prosthetic arthroplasty.
Special Concerns:
Assess benefits versus risks before use in children less than 3 months.
Laboratory Test Alterations:
Increase in serum bilirubin.
How Supplied:
Powder for injection: 1 g
Dosage
•IM, IV only
General infections.
Adults: 0.5-1 g q 4-6 hr up to 12 g/day for serious or life-threatening infections. Pediatric, over 3 months: 40-80 mg/kg/day in four equally divided doses, not to exceed adult doses.
Preoperatively.
Adults: 1-2 g 30-60 min before surgery.
During surgery.
Adults: 1-2 g.
Postoperatively.
Adults: 1-2 g q 6 hr for 24 hr.
In clients with impaired renal function, a dose of 7.5-15 mg/kg q 12 hr may be adequate. |
